Shannon Wells Lucid (born January 14, 1943) is an American biochemist (Öffnet in neuem Fenster) and retired NASA (Öffnet in neuem Fenster) astronaut (Öffnet in neuem Fenster). At one time, she held the record for the longest duration stay in space by an American and by a woman. She has flown in space five times including a prolonged mission aboard the Russian Mir (Öffnet in neuem Fenster) space station in 1996, and is the only American woman to have served aboard Mir. She was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor (Öffnet in neuem Fenster) in December 1996, making her the tenth person and first woman to be accorded that honor.
A graduate of the University of Oklahoma (Öffnet in neuem Fenster), where she earned her bachelor's degree (Öffnet in neuem Fenster) in chemistry in 1963, master's degree (Öffnet in neuem Fenster) in biochemistry (Öffnet in neuem Fenster) in 1970 and PhD (Öffnet in neuem Fenster) in biochemistry in 1973, Lucid was a laboratory technician at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation (Öffnet in neuem Fenster) in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma (Öffnet in neuem Fenster), from 1964 to 1966, a research chemist at Kerr-McGee (Öffnet in neuem Fenster), an oil company in Oklahoma City from 1966 to 1968, and a research associate at the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation from 1973 to 1978.
