Cat

The cat (Felis catus) is a domestic (Opens in a new window) species (Opens in a new window) of small carnivorous (Opens in a new window) mammal (Opens in a new window).[1] (Opens in a new window)[2] (Opens in a new window) It is the only domesticated species in the family Felidae (Opens in a new window) and is commonly referred to as the domestic cat or house cat to distinguish it from the wild members of the family.[4] (Opens in a new window) Cats are commonly kept as house pets but can also be farm cats (Opens in a new window) or feral cats (Opens in a new window); the feral cat ranges freely and avoids human contact.[5] (Opens in a new window) Domestic cats are valued by humans for companionship and their ability to kill rodents (Opens in a new window). About 60 cat breeds (Opens in a new window) are recognized by various cat registries (Opens in a new window).[6] (Opens in a new window)
